313: El Salvador: Is This Emerging Latin American Country Worth The Hype?

It seems like every day, a Private Client or subscriber to our newsletter asks me about El Salvador. I can’t say I necessarily blame them; with everything Bukele has done, from turning around the violent crime situation to legalizing Bitcoin, there are plenty of reasons for expats to take an interest in the direction of this emerging Latin American country.

But having not been to El Salvador myself for twenty-some-odd years, I decided to take a long weekend trip down there to meet up with a few business contacts and check out how things had progressed since I had last hitchhiked through it as a much younger man. I’m not sure what was in the air—perhaps it was the show’s “live radio” format of the show—but I was in a certain kind of mood and really just let loose.

I was so glad to have Benny Lewis on the show. Believe it or not, I’ve been wanting to get him on since I first started this podcast over five years ago! As you can see Benny’s approach to learning a new language is vastly different from that of many of the language apps and programs you’ll typically find out there.

Azerbaijan is a country that doesn’t get a ton of attention from expats – and for understandable reasons. But I always make a point to do my due diligence on the ground so I can speak real-world experience when informing my audience and client about their options for seeking more freedom in the world.

Remember, there’s no “Shangri-La,” perfect libertarian country out there. It’s about finding the right balance that’s best for your own personal situation, and it’s my sincere hope that in-depth reports like the ones you’ve heard over the last month provide insights that you’ll never get from a tourist guidebook or a government website.

It’s a lovely place and one certainly worth visiting at a minimum. As you can tell from this episode, I don’t like to sugarcoat anything or overhype a country when I am investigating it for clients and potential clients. As I’ve said many times, there is no “Shangri La” perfectly free country that exists, and that’s why I always set my feet on the ground in a country and go through residency processes myself so that I can relay the reality to my clients, and I take the same approach with this podcast when discussing these countries.

As with any other country, Georgia has a mix of good and bad qualities, and only you can be the final judge on which countries strike the right chord with you.

Well, that’s it for my trip to Turkey. While I went into this episode with the plan to discuss my entire trip, the conversation about Turkey and the efforts I am making to achieve my citizenship by investment was plenty enough to fill its own episode.

In a perfect world, I’d only have positive things to report about the process, but one of the reasons I do these programs is to find the roadblocks so that my clients don’t have to. And rest assured, when it’s all said and done, I will be the owner of a Turkish passport.

Today, I am going to share a conversation I had on The Tom Woods Show. This interview has gotten such a great response since it first aired that I wanted to share it here with you to make sure you didn’t miss it.

Tom didn’t let me off easy and really put me on the hot seat, bringing up a ton of objections that many who are first hearing about the expat lifestyle tend to come up with.

Answering Common Expat Objections

In this discussion, I respond to some common “black pilled” takes that Tom has heard about the negative side of expatriation, dispelling the notion that the advantages you can achieve outside your country of birth aren’t all that great when you break it down.
There is no Shangri-La – no perfect libertarian country in the world. It does not exist. But that’s not to be said that we can’t get more freedom in our lives by being overseas or by jurisdiction shopping.
I explain to Tom exactly what FATCA – the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act – is and how it works, and why it’s even caused some Americans to go as far as to renounce their U.S. citizenship!
I address Tom’s concern that whatever problems you have in the U.S., they may very well be worse outside the U.S., as was the case in certain countries when it came to COVID restrictions.
Tom and I talk about how Americans can utilize the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion to greatly reduce their tax burden while living overseas.
I break down the concept of citizenship by investment and how the process typically unfolds for those with substantial funds to invest overseas.
I lay out the many reasons to have a second passport, even if you do not plan to live outside your home country!
I provide some definitive first steps to take for those that have caught the expat bug and are ready to take their expat journey to the next level.

Today I am going to recap the last incredible week in Panama, beginning with a hugely informative conference for private clients and culminating in my 40th birthday party.

The last week has been unbelievable. Clients flew in from every corner of the world, literally from everywhere.

I am still decompressing from a busy and eventful week, but I wanted to first stop and take the time to record this episode for you and update you all on some other goings on here at Expat Money while everything is fresh on my mind.

PANAMA CONFERENCE AND BIRTHDAY PARTY RECAP

I recap the start of the week with the investor’s conference I put on in Panama with private clients from diverse places like Germany, Thailand and New Zealand attending.
I explain the difference between my “private” clients and my “regular” clients and how you can become one!
This week highlights why I like to get to know my prospective clients personally before I take them on – because I spend a LOT of time with them!
The type of information provided at this conference would literally take months or even years of research to acquire on your own – offshore investing and residency is definitely not a ‘DIY’ type of thing.
Meanwhile, we also formally launched The Expats Guide on Moving to Mexico, which has already launched to #1 in the “libertarianism” category on Amazon!
I also provide a preview of the upcoming trips I am planning in the next year for private clients. If these sounds interesting to you, read this important letter and consider if becoming a private is a good fit for you.
Finally, I reflect on my 40th birthday party that was made so special by the 150 + attendees who travelled from places like Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, USA, etc. – all culminating in an amazing fireworks display!
Ultimately, these events are about building a community and realizing that we aren’t the crazy ones out there. We in the Expat Money community are building a better and brighter future for ourselves while much of the world goes mad.
