Jeff, I know exactly how you feel, because I used to think and act exactly the same way.

I don't have to "like" or "disklike" how any particular events are unfolding in order to explain them.

No, I no longer take a "libertarian" view of geopolitics; and states do not, by their very nature,*act* in a "libertarian" manner, so what on Earth would be the point of discussing geopolitics through a "libertarian" lens?

I've known Mikkel quite a long time, and he's never been a Trump guy; his statement that he's acting as "a King", is exactly that, a statement, not a rant full of feelings and libertarian taglines to toss red meat to the likes of you.

Sorry to disappoint, but it's not what we do.

I just finished listening to the episode with Laszlo Kiss on the Expat Money Show, and wow, it was packed with insights! The way he talks about navigating the complexities of international living and the strategies for building a successful expat lifestyle is so refreshing. Laszlo doesn't just share theory – he shares real-world experience, and you can tell he truly understands the challenges that come with making a big move abroad. One thing that stood out to me was how he emphasized the importance of financial independence and diversifying your income streams as an expat. It’s not just about where you live, but how you live, and Laszlo’s approach makes it clear that careful planning can make all the difference. If you’re thinking of becoming an expat or are already living abroad, this episode is a must-listen. It’s full of practical advice, but also motivational for anyone looking to take control of their future on their own terms. Great stuff all around!

It was extraordinary to listen to one self proclaimed libertarian and another that claims to have such leanings whitewash and excuse the President of the United States declaring himself king and acting like a king. You both agreed he was acting like a king, yet neither of you could bring yourself to criticize him for doing so. I guess as long as you have the possibility of making money off his actions you do not really care.

I would hope in the future neither of you would assume to associate yourself with libertarianism ever again.

Just finished listening to Marc Clair’s episode on finding freedom in Mexico, and wow, what a refreshing perspective! The way he dives into the opportunities that come with living in Mexico – the lifestyle, the freedom, and the sense of community – really makes you think about what’s possible outside of the traditional grind.

I love how Marc touches on the importance of mindset and living intentionally. It’s not just about the location, but about finding a space where you can align your life with your values. If you’re even remotely curious about exploring life beyond borders or just want to hear about someone who’s living out their own version of freedom, this episode is a must-listen! It’s like a wake-up call to stop waiting for the "perfect time" and start taking action.

Wow, just finished listening to Doug Casey’s take on 2025, and let me tell you, this guy doesn't hold back! His crystal ball is loaded with some bold predictions that are both exciting and a little chilling. From the future of global politics to shifts in the financial landscape, Casey paints a picture of a world in flux. What really stood out to me was his take on how the dollar might be dethroned, and what that means for us regular folks trying to navigate the chaos.

The way he connects the dots between geopolitics, tech, and personal finance is fascinating. It's clear he’s thought long and hard about what’s coming, but he also drops in a healthy dose of skepticism about the "experts" who claim to have it all figured out. It’s a refreshing perspective, honestly.

Whether you agree or not, it definitely gets you thinking. If anything, it’s a wake-up call to start looking at things differently as we head into what could be a pretty turbulent few years. So if you’re up for some big ideas and a bit of crystal-ball gazing, give this episode a listen!

What stood out most to me was the breakdown of dual citizenship and “Plan B” thinking. The idea that citizenship can be a hedge — a strategic option in uncertain political or economic climates — seems to resonate especially in today's world.

He doesn’t oversell it as a magic bullet, but instead lays out concrete pathways (investment, naturalization, etc.) while flagging caveats.

The discussion about taxes was equally captivating. Thorup goes into how territorial tax systems differ, and how location of residence can drastically shift one’s tax burden.

For anyone with an eye on cross-border investments or relocating, that part alone is worth digging into.

I was also intrigued by the portion on safety deposit boxes and storing precious metals. The nuance he brings — e.g. why storing gold in one’s bank might not be ideal, or how terminology around safety deposit boxes matters legally — gives me a new lens to evaluate “security” beyond just numbers.
expatmoneyshow.com

All in all, it feels like a smart, balanced conversation. It doesn’t push a one-size solution, but instead arms listeners/readers with questions and frameworks. For anyone trying to navigate wealth, cross-border life, or protection in volatile times, this feels like a timely resource.

The conversation, which digs into the origins of the podcast and how Mikkel got started with Expat Money, feels like settling into a fireside chat with old friends who’ve navigated this journey together for years.

I particularly enjoyed the candid moments about the early podcasting days—especially the bit about how “your content is going to suck flat-out when you start,” and why that honesty is actually a strength in the long haul. It’s uplifting to hear how what began as a solo passion project evolved into a team effort—with nearly 30 staff involved now—without losing its original soul.

Comment on 365: The Bukele Effect: Inside El Salvador’s Radical Transformation by Maximiliano Martinez

Dear Mikkel,
You're right that Bukele is adopting radical reforms and policies in El Salvador, and they are favorable to large corporations and foreign groups but not to Salvadorans.

And it's true, he does it without asking permission, because he controls the army and the police, and when you have that control alone, the last thing you worry about is asking anyone's permission, much less your own people.

You know, regarding financial stability and economic freedom, that's debatable because, since Bukele concentrates all the power since 2021 and does what he says, respect for the law is lost, and the rules of the game are unclear.

If you're a friend of Bukele, everything will go well for you, but if you're not, you'll have a bureaucracy straight out of your wildest nightmares.

Mikkel, you should be honest and tell your subscribers that the rule of law doesn't exist in El Salvador; only Bukele's will exists, which isn't very different from Maduro in Venezuela or Putin in Russia.

Yes, it's true, Bukele recently approved "his" investment bank program that allows holding bitcoins.

Just think about this: your financial system is based on fiat currency, as is your local banking and payments system. You have a debt deficit, including your local pension system, of more than forty billion U.S dollars. And now you're thinking of authorizing investment banks to raise funds for bitcoin from select clients..... What do you think will happen to those banks if the financial system collapses due to a lack of liquidity, no matter how select their clients are?

Bukele came to power because of a pact with the gangs that he himself betrayed once he secured power. Do you really want to do business with these kinds of people?

Bukele never earned more than a high school diploma, and the Salvadoran people elected him because of his slick advertising campaign, not because of his capacity as a public administration.

Look at the phrase "if you build it, they will come..." I'm afraid for El Salvador it would be:

"if you build it without thinking... it might not work."

Because that's exactly what Bukele is doing.

He's building something huge and useless without thinking, and without the trust of freedom-minded entrepreneurs and investors.

Is El Salvador one of the safest countries in Latin America? Yes, of course.

That's why we have the largest MEGA PRISON in the Americas, as one of Bukele's great projects. But not just for criminals, but also for those politically persecuted by Bukele, who have already had 450 deaths since 2024, when he began his second unconstitutional term, which makes him a usurper according to the Salvadoran Constitution.

No, Mikkel, without the rule of law in El Salvador, you'd better not follow it as a country anymore, unless you want to send someone you hate to jail because Bukele lends his mega prison to foreigners.

Greetings from El Salvador

Just finished listening to this episode and wow—there’s a lot happening in the residency and citizenship space right now. I’ve been passively researching second residency options for a while, but this episode really made me realize how fast things are shifting, especially with countries tightening up their programs or changing requirements almost overnight.

What I love about Mikkel’s approach is that he doesn’t just talk about the “sexy” programs everyone’s buzzing about (like Portugal or St. Kitts). He actually digs into lesser-known but super practical options, especially for people who are serious about diversifying their lifestyle, assets, and personal freedoms. The bit about Georgia and the updates in the Caribbean programs were especially interesting.

Also, the reminder that residency and citizenship strategies aren’t one-size-fits-all was a good reality check. What works for a digital nomad might not make sense for a family of four—or someone running a brick-and-mortar business. It’s easy to get caught up in the Instagram fantasy of it all, but there’s real planning involved.

I hear you on Spain but I think their aim is to deter expats from buying property there not to grab money from expats. I don’t think they want us there period. It’s sad but they believe this will lower the prices for the locals and make more property available. Do you think stopping expats buying will provide the results they are driving for?

Thanks for the great show. One question about Milei: did you read his ACTUAL tweet? The one I read did not express support for the Libre coin, but expressed enthusiasm for the company, whose purported mission was a good one, not the emission of coins. Should Milei have been more guarded? Sure, he was naive in his enthusiasm without a deep careful study of the company before tweeting. But did he recommend a junk coin? I don't think so. - And I, like you guys, love what Milei is doing but have no qualms in calling wrongs where I see them. Yet I want to be fair about wrongs as much as rights.

Mikkel Thorup does a fantastic job of breaking down complex topics that are incredibly relevant for expats and anyone looking to diversify their global options. It's clear that navigating these areas requires both knowledge and a strategic mindset, and this conversation delivers valuable guidance for those aiming to achieve greater financial and personal freedom.

The segment on taxes was particularly eye-opening. Many people underestimate how much tax optimization can impact their wealth over time, and Mikkel’s practical advice on legally reducing tax liabilities while staying compliant is spot-on. It’s a great reminder that understanding international tax systems and treaties can open up significant opportunities.

I also appreciated the discussion around obtaining second citizenships. The idea of having a plan B in today’s unpredictable world resonates strongly, and Mikkel’s insights on the best options for dual citizenship, whether through investment or naturalization, were incredibly helpful.

The Florida Goldbacks will be released on 2025-01-15 with new note sizes. Now there is a smaller 1/2, a 2 and a larger 100 note that has 1/10th Oz of gold. The artwork has changed and can be seen at one of the pre-sales sites at https://www.goldback.com/news/florida-pre-sales-start-monday-december-2nd .

Finally someone speaks the truth about this. As a businessman here I can confirm what your lawyer told you is 100% true.
Doing business here is absurdly hard and extremely over regulated. I'm a bitcoiner so don't take this as bitcoin hate or as someone that doesn't know what they're talking about.
I did find it hilarious you mentioned the Western Union thing. Guess what? Look up the official figures for bitcoin for remittances. They're public and they're out there. Do your homework. Bitcoin is not used for remittances at all. Not even 1%. Why? Because the idea that transferring bitcoin to El Salvador is cheaper than western union is absurd and people aren't stupid. Sending the actual sats, if on lightning, is cheaper obviously but people conveniently forget that on-ramps and off-ramps have fees and spreads. Look up what WU and others charge. Basically flat fees around $5. Average remittance is close to $300. Try buying $300 worth of Bitcoin and cashing it out for under $5. You can't. WU? I can go with actual physical cash to tens if not hundreds of thousands of locations worldwide and have the transfer done or just online with a card and have it cashed out or direct deposited at its destination.

That doesn't sound correct to me, but maybe I am wrong. I have not spent any time in Omaha, maybe its the real sunshine state. I can tell you that Panama has blue skys and white fluffy clouds, and when it rains here it does so quickly and forcefully, then the sun shines again

Fascinating interview, which begs a question: Is sunlight coming through cloud cover equivalent in health benefits to that produced by blue skies? Panama has cloud cover a lot of the time. Panama City gets about 1,000 fewer hours of sunshine than Omaha, Nebraska. If not, wouldn't a dry, sunny climate be preferable to one in the tropics where you get a lot of rain, even if the latter is closer to the equator?

I am so sick and tired of the dictatorship of Trudope and the 3rd world country he is making of a once grand country called Canada!

Can't wait to meet you in person next week and looking forward to seeing Panama and especially the property at Playa Caracol and moving forward with residency.

Thank you/Mucha Gracias!!!

Thank you for the news and updates of what is happening in the world. Interesting that many European countries are increasing their financial requirements for resident visas. Understandable that people are leaving Chinada and heading south. It will be interesting what happens in El Salvador in the future but 1million BTC?

Mikkel, this is one of the top episodes since I started following you! Both informative and witty and answered one of my questions, which is: is Mikkel a workaholic 😁. I think that's great by the way because it means you love what you do..maybe feel a bit for your wife though to have to put up with your 24/7 work 😊.
Thank you for what you do and I hope one day to have enough funds to take advantage of your services.

It sure needs to be illegal.
I was looking forward to hearing the latest from Luongo, as his thesis that the Fed has been blowing up offshore dollar markets in order to defend Wall Street at the expense of EU central banks has great explanatory power. But as others are noting, he did seem a little agitated on this podcast. His random attack on the excellent James Corbett—who literally has a long-running series called Solutions Watch—was puzzling, as was his criticism of Whitney Webb and Ryan Cristián. Ryan especially helped me tremendously during covid by organizing and presenting deep, real time information, which strangely is exactly what Luongo criticises him for.

Thanks for sharing Dave and Mikkel. Lots of interesting information about what is happening in Ukraine, Russian and the rest of the world. Also, in my opinion China also has information gathering centres in Canada right now. Thoughts?

Glad we are looking at Latin and South America for our new home.

Also, in my opinion China also has information gathering centres in Canada right now. Thoughts?

Glad we are looking at Latin and South America for our new home.

The generations that have attended college since the 1990s have been indoctrinated in college and in K-12 schools. As a result of the indoctrination, the been trend toward support for socialism is unsurprising. Since socialism cannot work and has repeatedly failed, Tom is justified in dissing the younger cohort for believing in a delusion. Of course, you can say similar things about almost every cohort since the 1880s, but the trend is escalating. Pew finds that there are sharp generational differences as to support for socialism and opposition to capitalism. More than 40% of the public under 50 has a positive view of socialism. That is enough to change society, and it portends increasing authoritarianism in America. It is hard not to be emotional about this generational stupidity, although it is not their fault. The Republican Party has allowed the Democrats to turn American education institutions into socialist indoctrination camps. One of many Pew studies is here: https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2022/09/19/modest-declines-in-positive-views-of-socialism-and-capitalism-in-u-s/

I get his point, but I think calling the EU Commissioner something like stupid is way below the belt and does not help at all establish whatever he is asserting, not to mention how he would make generalizations about boomers and women. I just wish he had asked himself what made those people like the EU commissioner do what they did. I like the way this guy started out in a humble way, but the way he developed his argument especially further towards the end leaves something very distasteful to some audience like me. I just cannot imagine what this guy would be like if he actually had that PhD in geopolitics. There's a part of him I somehow like - he's not in the gray about anything -- he's clearly on one side and not the other. That sells a lot nowadays, especially among influencers. But if there's one word I would somehow use to describe not necessarily him but the way he argued in this podcast -- it was a word he also mentioned --- Nazi. Nice content and good learnings from this man but definitely I can't be one of the millions of people who regularly read his stuff. I don't even wanna remember his name. I just hope he should listen to you more and learn more from your example, Mikkel, because literally in terms of demeanor you're light-years away.

Hey Ned, thanks for your message, if you have been listening to the show for a while, you know I let people say what they want to say. I am a millennial and I was not offended by what he said as I believe myself as an exception. Tom is an interesting character and his rants are certainly intense but none the less I am glad to have had a chance to interview him and explore different ideas. Always trying to learn and see if what someone says has merit or not. Best, Mikkel
