071: John Perkins – Confessions of an Economic Hitman – Yesterday and Today!

John Perkins interviewed by Mikkel Thorup on The Expat Money Show

John Perkins was an Economic Hitman. After finishing Business School, he wanted to join the Peace Corp. Around the same time, he had a job interview with the NSA. Their assessment of him was that he would make the perfect Economic Hitman and they encouraged him to join the Peace Corp. There he was thrown into the jungles of the Amazon River. He learned how to survive, to speak another language and understand how developing nations worked.

After the Peace Corps, John was the Chief Economist at a major international consulting firm. He advised the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, U.S. Treasury Department, Fortune 500 corporations, and leaders of countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

You may ask, what is an Economic Hitman? and how did John Perkins come to write a book called “Confessions of an Economic Hitman?”

John Perkins life and the life of all Economic Hitman from around the globe are what action thriller movies are made of. Intrigue and espionage. Government coup and presidential assassination.

John tells us stories of working with Prime Ministers, Presidents, and Heads of States of several Countries around the Globe during the 1970s. John Perkins was told he was doing good work, that the only way to help developing countries was to get them huge loans to build schools, infrastructure and more. However, the reality was that the money wasn’t going to the countries involved, it was going to large corporations inside the USA who would build the roads and the schools and the countries would be left with a huge debt that they couldn’t possibly pay off.

Mikkel Thorup and John Perkins talk in-depth about:

  • The story behind the story
  • Iran Regime Change – the origin
  • Jamie Raldos – Ecuador president assassinated
  • Omar Torrijos – Panama president assassinated
  • Iraq – Saddam Hussein
  • 3 stages – economic hitman – jackals – military
  • Corporatocracy

Confessions Of An Economic Hitman

Confessions Of An Economic Hitman took 14 years to write. It provides Perkins’ account of his career with engineering consulting firm Chas. T. Main in Boston. Ultimately, Confessions spent 73 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list, has been published in at least 32 languages and is used in many college and university programs.

Life After the NSA and Chas. T. Main

Let’s Talk About ‘What is a Capitalist’?

A capitalist is a person who uses their wealth to invest in trade and industry for profit in accordance with the principles of capitalism.

Likewise, Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

What Is Corporatocracy

Corporatocracy is a term used to refer to an economic and political system controlled by corporations or corporate interests. It is most often used as a term to describe the economic situation in a particular country. This is different from corporatism, which is the organization of society into groups with common interests. Corporatocracy as a term is often used by observers across the political spectrum.

How Can we Change our Perceptions

To be successful we need to change our perceptions. And how can we change our perceptions? We need to create a lifestyle, to create companies, to create a business’ that look to the long term benefits not just the short term benefits for all.

We need to protect the only planet we have right now, be conscientious and do the right thing for future generations, and we need to work together to make huge changes.

He is an author & activist committed to transforming the world into a sustainable, just, and peaceful place where all beings thrive.
