079: Mikkel Thorup – A Year in Review

Mikkel Thorup interviews himself on The Expat Money Show

Mikkel Thorup, host of the Expat Money Show interviews himself. Truly it is nice to hear what’s been going on in the life of an expat living in the Middle East. The changes over the past 6 months, and what’s ahead for the next 6 months. The fact that he has written an email for EMS Pulse Daily Newsletter every day for more than 300 days is pretty darn impressive!

Imagine 79 Weeks straight of broadcasting the Expat Money Show. Every. Single. Friday! Mikkel shares what it’s like to have a weekly podcast, the work involved and how much growth has taken place since he ventured into this space.

The great thing about podcasting is that it’s very personal. He researches his guests, talks with them, books them on the show and then really gets to know them on a personal level during the one-hour conversation. After the episode airs he sends the recording to his guest so that they can send out to their audience, and he, of course, sends to his via his website, the Expat Money Show. It becomes like a cross-pollination of genres and fans. It’s a win/win for sure.

Past Guests

We’ve always believed in co-operation, not competition. That’s why you’ll hear from guests that are in our field in the offshore market. Guests like Doug Casey in episode 60 from International Man. Or Richard Maybury from The Early Warning Report in episode 6. And John Perkins from episode 71 – Confessions of an Economic Hitman. These old boys really know how to knock it out of the park! The lessons of life learned from these 3 veterans are like gold.

If you haven’t listened to these 3 podcasts specifically, go and take some time so that you can understand where we were and where we should be going, today!!

Past guests become friends in most cases. Everyone works together to help build each other up so that’s what makes podcasting so worthwhile. For Mikkel, this is what makes the business so much fun.

Or just didn’t feel like it. But that’s not who he is. Rule #1 in life: Do all you say you are going to do. Simple. Easy. Just do it! He committed to writing to you every day. Keeping you abreast of what was going on in his daily life and that of the Expat Money Show. And that he has done!

Thailand

Thailand is the first choice for the entire family. Listen in as Mikkel explains the benefits and pitfalls of moving to Thailand from the Middle East.

Next came Malaysia

Korea was a bit hit. There is so much to do in Korea and Mikkel’s wife speaks Korean, so the transition would be fairly simple. Why didn’t that work out?

Okay, no Korea, what about the Philippians? or China?

Then the decision to come West, starting with Colombia or Argentina?

Finally…

Panama

Beautiful, sunny, easy-going Panama. The Thorup family decided on a new life in Panama.

There are so many great reasons they chose Panama. The main one is that as Canadians, they are one of 50 countries that have easy access to Panama in what’s called ‘The Friendly Nations Visa‘. No other country has such an easy process for immigration and residency.

Mikkel’s wife is Chinese. They are not one of the 50 countries, however, Mikkel is able to ‘sponsor’ her to become a permanent resident in Panama. The process is easy, and within 5 years you are able to apply for citizenship and receive a new passport. If this interests you, please contact the office at Mikkel@ExpatMoney.io and he can put you in touch with the lawyer and bank that he used. He trusts them and they did an outstanding job.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It is always fun to tell my story. My story of the Expat Money Show and how I came to work with Escape Artist. I can’t wait for episode 100, by then my family and I will be settled in Panama and my podcast will have grown exponentially.
